Indian Women's Finish 3rd in Chennai

The Indian Women’s Rugby team participated in the Asia Rugby Development Tournament held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium , Chennai on the 20th and 21st of February ,2016 .

 

The Indian Team led by Vahbiz Bharucha were the team to look out for after their efforts in the 2015 edition of the tournament which saw them finishing in 2nd place. The draw consisted of 5 teams , namely

  • India
  • Guam
  • South Korea
  • Indonesia
  • Nepal

India took on Nepal in their opening match which saw the Hosts coming on top with an easy victory with the final score reading 36-0 in favor of the Indians . They Later took on South Korea . The One sided match ended in disappointment for the Indian girls as they lost 26-0 to a strong Korean Line Up.

In the Last match of the day India took on Guam , the number one ranked team(Guam) were hot favorites coming into the match. The match did not disappoint , a nail biting contest till the very last whistle. Both teams salvaged a point as the match ended 12-12 in a draw .

Day 2 saw the Indian team fight for a spot in the Cup Final. They took on Indonesia which was the highest scoring match of the tournament, with the Indians thrashing their Indonesian counterparts 71-0 . India unfortunately missed out on a spot in the finals by 1 point as they finished off their Pool with 9 points , while South Korea qualified with 11 points and Guam with 10. India took on Nepal in the 3rd/4th playoff match which saw the indian clinch bronze with a 39-0 Victory.

The finals of the tournament featured South Korea taking on the number 1 ranked Guam team in a Captivating match up, The Koreans came up on top , defeating Guam 24-19 in a nail biting contest as the match went to sudden death. The tournament showcased high quality rugby , with a host of talented players taking part. The Story of  Tournament the  for the Indians was the performance of Hupi Mahji who was the Top Scorer of the Weekend with 11 Tries.
