In February 2016, the Indian Men’s Rugby Seven’s team participated in a two-tournament series, kicking off in Chennai (20-21st February), India and finishing in Al Ain, UAE (27-28th February).
The first leg of the series saw the Indian team facing off against Lebanon in the Plate final. The thrilling match ended in disappointment for the Indian team, as they lost 19-7 to a strong Lebanese lineup. The loss placed them in 6th out of the 10 participating teams. The finals of the Chennai leg of the tournament saw Chinese Taipei take on Thailand, where the team from China defeated their Thai counterparts 36-21.
After a disconcerting start to the series, the Indian team travelled to Al Ain (UAE) the following weekend raring for a chance to redeem themselves. They got the perfect opportunity to do so when they defeated Iran in the Plate Semifinals to take on Lebanon in the Plate finals. In a hard fought game, they defeated the Lebanese team 19-14, . The finals of the Al Ain leg of the tournament again featured Chinese Taipei, taking on the hosts, UAE. In a captivating matchup, the Chinese team came out on top, defeating the hosts 24-22 in a nail biting contest.
The tournament showcased world class rugby, with a host of talented players taking part. Although the Chinese Taipei team won both legs of a very competitive tournament, the Indian team did the country proud by winning the Plate in UAE . It was a considerable result against a formidable Lebanese team, on the back of a defeat against the same team only one week prior.
