India Women’s Rugby Sevens Secure Best-Ever Asian Games Finish with Sixth Place

Nagoya, Japan, October 3, 2026: The Indian Women’s Rugby Sevens Team finished sixth at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games following a 20-0 defeat to Kazakhstan in the fifth-place playoff, recording their best-ever finish at the Asian Games.

The sixth-place finish improves on India’s previous best of seventh place, recorded at Hangzhou 2022. The campaign also saw India win two matches at a single edition of the Asian Games for the first time, defeating Malaysia and Singapore.

India opened its campaign with defeats against Hong Kong China and China before responding with a 26-5 win over Malaysia in its final pool match. India then defeated Singapore 22-5 in the 5th-8th place classification match to progress to the fifth-place playoff against Kazakhstan, where they fell short despite giving their all.

India scored 10 tries during the campaign, its highest-ever tally at the Asian Games. Sandhyarani Tudu led the scoring chart for Paul Delport’s side with four tries, while Arti Kumari scored two. Bhumika Shukla, Amandeep Kaur, Kalyani Patil and Nirmalya Rout also registered tries during the campaign.

India scored in four of its five matches, with their only scoreless outing coming in the fifth-place playoff against Kazakhstan.

The Indian Women’s Rugby Sevens Team will now turn its attention to Round 2 of the Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Series, scheduled for October 17-18 in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
