April 25, 2025 – Guwahati, Assam: Bihar emerged victorious at the 12th Senior National Women’s Rugby Sevens Championship, clinching the national title with a 21-12 win over defending champions Odisha in a high-intensity final held at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati, Assam. The two-day tournament, held on April 23-24, brought together 24 state teams and showcased the best of India’s women’s rugby talent.
In a closely contested final, Bihar’s disciplined strategy and strong defensive performance proved decisive, securing their second national title after their previous win in 2022. Arti Kumari and Anshu Kumari played key roles throughout the tournament, each scoring 12 tries and providing leadership and attacking momentum for the team.
Odisha, the reigning champions entering the tournament, delivered a commendable campaign. Sunita Hansdah stood out as the tournament’s top try-scorer with 13 tries, further reinforcing her reputation as one of India’s most consistent rugby athletes.
In the third-place playoff, Maharashtra overcame Delhi 14-5 to claim the bronze medal, concluding a tournament filled with competitive matchups, emerging talent, and compelling team performances.
The championship was jointly organized by the Indian Rugby Football Union (IRFU) and the Rugby Association of Assam, with support from the Sports Authority of India. The event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony attended by senior officials and dignitaries.
This edition of the championship highlighted the continued growth of women’s rugby in India. From competitive rivalries to individual excellence, the 2025 tournament reflected the increasing depth, professionalism, and community support shaping the future of the women’s game.
