The Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati, Assam, is set to host back-to-back rugby action as the 12th editions of the Senior National Women’s and Men’s Rugby Sevens Championships take place from April 23-24 and April 27-28, 2025, respectively.

Organized by the Indian Rugby Football Union (IRFU) in partnership with the Rugby Association of Assam and with support from the Sports Authority of India, these premier national championships will bring together 50 state teams (24 women’s and 26 men’s) in a high-energy celebration of athleticism, teamwork, and sporting excellence.

Women’s Championship: April 23-24, 2025

The women’s championship will kick off proceedings, with 24 teams vying for national glory. Defending champions Odisha return after a strong campaign in 2024, looking to extend their legacy of consistent performance and disciplined play.

Joining the title race is Bihar, runners-up in 2024 and champions in 2022, with a well-balanced squad combining experienced players and emerging stars. Maharashtra, Delhi, and Kerala are also expected to be major contenders, given their history of reaching the knockout stages with tactical depth and physical endurance.

This tournament continues to reflect the rapid rise of women’s rugby in India – fueled by grassroots development, player dedication, and a growing support system. Every pass, sprint, and tackle serves as inspiration for the next generation of female athletes.

Matches begin on April 23, culminating in the final and prize distribution ceremony on April 24.

Men’s Championship: April 27–28, 2025

Four days later, the spotlight turns to the 26 men’s teams participating in the nation’s premier men’s rugby sevens tournament. Defending champions Haryana enter the competition with confidence, aiming to retain their title with a squad known for its intensity, fitness, and unrelenting work ethic.

West Bengal comes in as a rising force, recognized for their structured, smart play and consistent performances. Maharashtra, seeking redemption after recent near-misses, is back with a refocused squad ready to challenge for top honours.

Teams like Bihar, Delhi, Punjab, Gujarat, and host state Assam will add further competitiveness to the field, each bringing a unique blend of ambition, local pride, and sporting spirit.

The men’s championship not only represents elite competition, but also highlights the broader growth of rugby in India – driven by community passion, state-level commitment, and an expanding talent base.

Matches begin on April 27, with the finals and closing ceremony scheduled for April 28.

These championships reaffirm the strength and promise of Indian rugby, both men’s and women’s. As the sport continues its upward trajectory, these events stand as a powerful testament to the talent, grit, and unity of athletes from every corner of the country.
