Shivaji University and Chandigarh University earn top Rugby honors at the Khelo India University Games 2023.

The men’s and women’s rugby matches came to an end on Friday with Chandigarh University and Shivaji University (Kolhapur) winning their respective categories at the Khelo India University Games 2023 held in Guwahati, Assam from 21 – 23 February, 2024.

The finals were played between Shivaji University Kolhapur and Chandigarh University in the women’s category. Shivaji University dominated the game to beat Chandigarh University by a margin of 15-0. In the men’s category, Chandigarh University took on KIIT to strike gold as they won a closely contested match 12-7.

The Khelo India University Games was witness to some of the best rugby players that have featured in the national team at some point in the last few years. KIUG as a platform also enables Rugby India to keep a close eye on upcoming talent from all over the country, creating a pathway for them to enter the Indian National team.

Nandita Gorlosa, Sports & Youth Welfare Minister, Government of Assam, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sports Authority of India (Khelo India Division), and the Government of Assam for their support, warmth, and hospitality. Initiatives under the prestigious Khelo India banner have revolutionised sport in the country today. Events such as the Khelo India University Games are catalysts that enable our players to continue on their journey with the sport, as their progress through university and higher education.,” said Mr. Rahul Bose, President, Indian Rugby Football Union, at the end of the competition.

A total of 16 teams competed in the men’s and women’s categories with 192 players representing their respective universities. After 2 days of intense competition, two teams stood out.

The event is set to spotlight the country’s most promising young talent in the dynamic Sevens format and marks a major step in Rugby India’s grassroots development pathway.
